Amherst, New Hampshire — In celebration of spring, LaBelle Winery will host its inaugural “Burning of the Vines Family Bonfire” event on April 26, 2019 at 6 p.m. in the lower field at its Amherst location. The rain date for the event will be April 25, 2019 at 6 p.m. The event is free and requires no pre-registration.
To ensure an optimal fall harvest, grape vines that grow in cold climates are usually pruned once a year in the spring. The grape vines’ cuttings, known as “canes,” are difficult to compost, leading many wineries to dispose of them by burning.
Josh Boisvert, vineyard manager at LaBelle Winery, says, “We prune the vines in the spring to remove winter ‘kill’ and most of the growth from the last year. This sends a message to the vine that it is time to begin growing again. The vines are dormant through the winter months.”
LaBelle’s Burning of the Vines bonfire event will celebrate the rebirth and rejuvenation of spring. Upon arrival, guests will be given a vine cutting and a blank card on which they can write something they wish to leave behind, or a positive affirmation for the coming spring and summer seasons. Guests will then be invited to throw their cutting and card into the bonfire.
“We are thrilled to invite the community to this celebration as we look forward to the spring and summer growth and our fall harvest,” says Amy LaBelle, LaBelle Winery’s co-owner and winemaker. “
On the evening of the event, The Bistro at LaBelle Winery will offer fire-inspired specials along with their new spring menu. Snacks and beverages will be available for purchase by the bonfire.
